Sabalenka Defeated by Swiatek in Madrid Open Final
Swiatek Avenges Last Year's Loss
Iga Swiatek avenged her loss in last year's final to Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday, winning the Madrid Open in a thrilling three-set match. Swiatek came back from a 3-1 deficit in the first set and held off a late charge from Sabalenka to win 6-3, 6-2.
Sabalenka's Comeback Falls Short
Sabalenka fought back from a break down in the second set to level the match at 4-4, but Swiatek broke her serve again in the next game and held on to win the title. The Belarusian hit 28 winners to Swiatek's 17, but she also made 31 unforced errors to Swiatek's 18.
The victory is Swiatek's first WTA title since winning the French Open last year. She is now 3-1 lifetime against Sabalenka.
