Biden Proclaims Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week
Commemorating Fallen Officers and Honoring Service
Proclamation Designates May 15th as Memorial Day
President Joseph R. Biden Jr. has proclaimed May 15, 2024, as Peace Officers Memorial Day. The proclamation also designates the week in which the date falls, May 12th through May 18th, as National Police Week.
Annual Events Honor Fallen Law Enforcement
National Police Week is marked by several events, including the Annual National Peace Officers Memorial Service, "Stand Watch for the Fallen," and an Ambassador Wreath Laying. These events provide an opportunity to honor the lives and sacrifices of peace officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.
Presidential Authority and Authorization
The President's authority to proclaim Peace Officers Memorial Day and National Police Week stems from a joint resolution approved by Congress in 1962 and amended by Public Law 103-322. These measures authorize the President to designate these events in recognition of the vital role played by peace officers in protecting our communities.
