Overview
William Jefferson Clinton, born August 19, 1946, is an American politician who served as the 42nd president of the United States from 1993 to 2001. Clinton oversaw the country's longest peacetime economic expansion, and he also signed into law the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). In 1998, the House of Representatives impeached Clinton on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice, but he was acquitted by the Senate.
Clinton was born in Hope, Arkansas, and he graduated from Georgetown University and Yale Law School. He entered politics in 1976, when he was elected attorney general of Arkansas. He served as governor of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and from 1983 to 1992. In 1992, Clinton was elected president of the United States, defeating incumbent Republican George H.W. Bush.
