Morocco Fans Crash Pitch in Protest of Late Argentina Goal
Fans Invade Field as Controversial Goal Ends Opener
Saint-Etienne, France -
Morocco's Olympic soccer opener against Argentina ended in chaos on Wednesday as fans stormed the pitch to protest a late goal that left them feeling aggrieved.
The match, which was approaching its conclusion at around 7 pm local time, had the feel of a training ground drill with Morocco seemingly content to defend and Argentina unable to find a breakthrough. That all changed in the dying seconds when Argentina thought it had snatched a dramatic equalizer. However, the goal was ruled out after a VAR review, sparking outrage among the Moroccan players and fans.
As the final whistle blew, a number of fans made their way onto the pitch to protest the decision. They were quickly followed by more fans, and soon the pitch was filled with a sea of red shirts. The Moroccan players tried to calm the situation, but the fans were not to be pacified. They continued to protest for several minutes before eventually being dispersed by security.
The incident is a black mark on what was otherwise a positive day for Morocco at the Olympics. The team played well and deserved to get something from the game. However, the late goal and subsequent pitch invasion have overshadowed their performance.
